The upcoming showdown between Jake Paul and former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson at AT&T Stadium has been touted as one of the “can’t miss” sporting events of the summer. Deep in the heart of Texas, Tyson and the “Problem Child” will go toe-to-toe in a fully-professional bout that has polarized public opinion.
Many are divided as to whether the 57-year-old Tyson (who turns 58 shortly before the July 20 fight) has any business going up against an inexperienced boxer 30 years his junior. Health experts have warned Tyson that he is putting himself in serious danger if he goes through with the Paul fight — although an icon of the sport has put his stock into “Iron Mike” ahead of his first bout in 19 years.
Sugar Ray Leonard chimes in on the Tyson – Paul bout
Former undisputed welterweight champion Sugar Ray Leonard caught up this week with FightHype, which asked the 68-year-old if he had any advice to impart to Tyson on his return to the ring.
“He doesn’t need advice, right?” Leonard asked rhetorically, a non-answer that might strike a little fear into Paul’s camp.
Tyson, once known as the “Baddest Man on the Planet,” has struck a confident tone during his pre-fight press conferences with Paul — who has styled himself as “Titanium Jake” and is betting that putting on more muscle in recent months will help him defeat Tyson.
Leonard was non-commital when asked to pick a winner, but he did indicate he would be tuning in on Netflix, just like scores of other fans around the United States.
“Put it this way, a lot of people are gonna watch that fight,” Leonard said. “I’m one of them.”
